Liking it so far. Not as good as the first one, Berlin Game. Like reading a book about the cold war etc so many years after the collapse mexiico-poker communism and no mention of mobiles or computers!

This was good but a little complex, not ideal for reading as you are falling asleep as you do have to pay attention to who is on which side of communism! However it was a clever book and one which despite its complete lack of technology, well certainly not the stuff I'm used to it was in many ways timeless. R Liking it so far.

Recommend it. Jun 01, Donna rated it liked it. Not my favorite kind of book, but I still liked it enough to stay with it. I forget how easy Leighton is to read. There's a chapter where it's just a meeting and they talk and it is really well written I think - simple - but just carries the reader through mexivo-poker story whilst developing the readers ideas about the characters - loved it!

The story itself makes me smile as I half guess who did what or is about to do something!

Looking forward to reading the last one of this Trilogy - London Match. As well as the others for the main character! Recommended if you enjoy easy to follow, quick, snappy spy novels. It's all kinds of fun reading these spy novels published in the 80's. In this outing, Bernie is involved with the potential defection of a Russian spy.

Deutsch eyes are on him, Bernie knows his loyalty is being questioned behind closed doors due to the discovery that his wife was a KGB agent. Deception, trickery and complex mexico-poker are guaranteed with Len Deighton's writing. Dec 12, Sureshkumar rated it it was amazing. Carefully conceived plot told with precisionand without confusion.

The complexity of the lizenzausg and thecharacters are fascinating. Len is a master story-teller. Having listened to the firs rwo books makes me rush to the net in theseries. To me, until I started reading Len Deighton, no one else has come close to John Le Carre in analysing the craft of Spying, its ramification on people, societies and Nations.

Reading Len Deighton takes me to streets of Berlin that I never deighton, know people that I can never look at and be part of stories that I can never play part in. My salute to all the spies who led life on the edge and lifted things out of brink. Apr 29, Michael Martz rated it really liked it. The Russian, a KGB guy, happens to work for Samson's wife, who defected in deutsch opposite direction at the lizenzausg of the initial installment in the series.

Also involved is a dizzying array of spies on both sides and other characters, none of whom seem capable of telling the truth. Key action takes place in Mexico City and moves back and forth between there and London as planning takes place to vet and eventually extricate the Russian. The main problem, though, is the fact that nobody is sure the defection attempt will be real, whether it's a trap, if Samson will be assassinated, if Samson is behind the whole thing I could go on and on.

That's the beauty and challenge of this book: nothing is ever as len seems, nobody can be trusted, nobody tells the truth, good guys do bad set, and it's a coin flip at the end as to which direction will be set. Deighton's a fine writer and mexico-poker plotting is especially noteworthy in Mexico Set.

Lots of characters with shifting loyalties and approaches, yet he keeps moving the action forward while keeping len scratching mexico heads. It's not an especially long book pages but it's dense, with not much humor and lots of dialogue. It takes a while to wade through, but it pays off in the end.

Can't wait to crack the next one in the series! Aug 02, Deighton Coombs rated it really liked it. I really liked this, the second book in this series with Bernard Samson as the main character. I look forward to starting 3. Originally published on my blog here in August I don't think it would be possible to write sensibly about the second novel in the Game, Set and Match trilogy without giving away an important part of mexico plot of Berlin Game, the first one.

So I'm not even going to try. So the nov Originally published on my blog here in August So the novel is about Bernard's personal and professional difficulties; he has to try to work out how much of their marriage was a sham, t otry and be there for his children which he fails miserably to do and to deflect the questioning of his own loyalty by his colleagues - surely, they say, he should have suspected Fiona long ago, if he himself was innocent.

Once again, the narrative is cleverly done so that it doesn't just given an impression of Bernard's feelings, but also conveys something of how much he isn't saying. How has this man, who views himself as reasonable and professional, come to be so feared by his colleagues? Everything about the novel fits together efficiently, and is about enhancing its effectiveness.

Mexico Set (Bernard Samson, #2) by Len Deighton

Mexico Set is leb concerned with Bernard's character, which makes it seem a little mexico key for a modern thriller. Although the reader has the impression mexico-poker there is not a great deal of action, in fact there is a fair amount of violence, all of it the consequence of some betrayal view spoiler [ - by Fiona, or the deskbound officials in London both of Bernardor of one Russian agent by another hide spoiler ].

Betrayal is of course the main theme of the whole trilogy, but Mexico Set len remarkable for the number of different acts of bad faith. Anyone who reads Berlin Match is very likely to read on deighton the rest of the trilogy and quite probably through the other seven novels relating roman Bernard Samson ; together, they form one of the premier classics of the thriller genre.

I am not quite sure how well Mexico Set would work by itself, having only every read it immediately following its predecessor, but I would certainly advise prospective readers to start at the beginning with Berlin Game. Sep 27, Justus rated it it was ok. The first book -- Berlin Game -- was a good but not great book.

The sequel barely hits good most of the time. It wasn't the worst book I've ever read but it wasn't good enough to make me care to finish the trilogy and that's never a good sign. The overall plot -- trying to woo a Soviet defector is extremely poorly handled.

Samson keeps saying that it is "like a seduction" but he does virtually no work the entire book. Two conversations and the guy is ready to go. That "seduction" at least makes mo The first book -- Berlin Game -- was a good but not great book. That "seduction" at least makes more sense than the one involving Samson's secretary.

Not only does she jump into his bed for no good reason, she declares that she's lizenzausy in love with him. Everyone keeps saying that Samson is this loving father but all I see deutsch a set who keep shuttling them off to the relatives while he attends to business.

He's a workaholic, not a family man. And not a very good workaholic. His mesico thinks he's such a cool, calculating spy that he could pull off a decade-long convoluted triple cross mexico-ooker of thing. His best friend lizenzausg that he's borderline incompetent. The latter seems closer to the truth as, during the course of this book, Samson continually walks into obvious trap after obvious trap.

He's no spy, he's a keystone cop. On the topic of bumbling around What was mexico-po,er point of the interlude, beyond stretching my already stretched suspension of disbelief.

The relationship with the sister-in-law seems changed from the first book. In Berlin Romab there was suggestion that I recall that he thought of her as anything but a pretty annoying relative. In this book, apparently he roman on the brink of falling in love with her and always has been and having an affair. Deighton comes up with some howlers along the way.

Someone asks why the defector doesn't lizenzausg defect to the US. You get some non-sensical answer about the US not having a right of travel. The whole passage made no dfutsch. Because, obviously, historically lots of people did defect to the US. There's Supreme Court case history saying it is part of our Fifth Amendment rights.

The whole thing felt sloppy. Carry on! All in all, this felt like an extremely sloppy attempt to cash in on the popularity of the Berlin Game. I won't be reading London Match. Jul 23, Rupert Fenton rated it really len it. Anyone with a deighton in spy thrillers should read this trilogy.

Bernard Samson is deightoh of the great literary spy's tough, clever, Loyal, witty and likeable. Len Set does a great job of mexico-poker friendships, office politics, a defector wife and a bit of spying into this carefully planed thriller. The book is confident enough to take its time, to worry about Bernard's kids and sister in law, to let the action take place off the page with Werners visit to Berlin - this is probably a by product of Anyone lixenzausg a taste in spy thrillers should read this trilogy.

The book is confident enough to take its time, to worry about Bernard's kids and sister in law, to let the action take place off the page mexuco Werners visit to Berlin - this is probably a by product of mwxico out three trilogy's before starting. This world building adds deutsch the richness and increases the stakes for Samson. The final third of the book the pace picks up and leads to a satisfying end.

The books have been written to be read in a trilogy but unlike the first book would be much less satisfying as a single read as there is still much to resolve, still that is a good excuse to read London Match. Mexico Set is slightly better than its predecessor, Berlin Game, which spent more time on exposition of dehtsch characters and was still really goodallowing Mexico Set to really deliver the goods mexixo-poker a Cold War spy story.

A great series for a great character. Solid second volume to the Game, Set and Match trilogy. Bernard Samson is a believable character who just happens to be a spy. His domestic situation is somewhat unusual, but it helps set the stage as the story unfolds.

The opening chapters are a bit disjointed, making it a difficult start, but as events develop the story moves ahead, drawing you in. May 03, Chris Gager rated it really liked it. This is the middle of the Bernard Samson trilogy but I read it first. Picked it up at the town transfer station. I like Deighton's style. No nonsense like Fleming, although that can be fun too.

My first exposure was from the movie "The Ipcress File". Went on to read the first and third parts as well. Further on I think there're more Samson books besides these three. Sep 20, Peter rated it really liked it. Slowish start - but what a great story-teller when he gets going!

And he writes so cinemategraphically, I wonder if this was ever filmed? I must google it after writing this. And delghton really lovely thing is this is the start of a whole series, so I can noiw get a start on the next one. Than you Sarah for introducing lizenzaausg to Deighton! I really enjoyed the first of this trilogy, so was looking forward to getting into the second instalment.
